A SPECTRE OF SOUNDS

James Bond Music reimagined

007-Theme

The 007-theme has been seen by many as John Barry’s attempt to write an alternative theme song for the James Bond-series. No other piece of music, except for the main James Bond-theme, has appeared in more of the movies. It was first heard in the second film in the franchise «From Russia With Love» both during the fight in the gypsy camp and later when James Bond steals the Lektor-machine. An alternative version is featured several places during the underwater battles in «Thunderball». The cue then appeared again during the Bond’s reconnaissance with «Little Nellie» in «You Only Live Twice», in the climactic battle at Blofeld’s oil rig in «Diamonds Are Forever» and finally during the Amazonas river boat chase in «Moonraker». Sadly, it has not been heard since. I have for a long time hoped that the current movie composers would bring the theme out of retirement.

I struggled to get the right feel for my new version. For a while it sounded corny and more like a parody of an old western movie theme. It was almost scraped before Øyvind got involved and gave the main theme more complex chords. I beefed up and the guitars and drums and gave it much more energy. On the final version all guitars were done by my friend Mads Horn. He plays with so much emotion and feel and he really brings the song to life! Are Nerland and Øyvind Brøter from my band Pymlico is on bass and hammond B3 / piano, Petter Lied and Filip Brekke Steigedal did the horns and I played drums, keyboards and did the programming and soundscapes.
